SERVICE
Infrastructure & Construction
The surface is the last thing to go down. Whether it lasts depends almost entirely on what was built underneath it.
THE SERVICE
Built from the formation up.
The part nobody sees.
This is the groundworks and civil engineering side: excavation, drainage, ducting, kerbing, footways and the foundation layers that carry everything above them. On a new build or a full reconstruction it’s the bulk of the work, and it’s the part nobody sees once the job is finished.
It starts with getting the ground right. Excavating to formation, checking the ground can carry the loading it’s going to see, and building back up in layers, compacted as they go. Where the ground is soft or holding water, that gets dealt with here through drainage or a geotextile separation layer, because there is no way to correct it later from the top.
Drainage is designed alongside the levels, not after them. Gullies, channels and soakaways have to be set so water actually runs to them, which means the falls across the whole area are worked out before anything is laid. Getting this wrong is expensive to fix, since correcting a fall means taking the surface back off.
Ducting and services go in at the same stage, so that lighting columns, power, communications and anything else planned for the site have a route without a trench being cut through new surfacing six months later. Kerbs and edgings are set to hold the surfacing in place and define the finished lines, and footways and hardstanding are built to their own construction rather than as a thinner version of the road.

DELIVERY STRUCTURE
Typical scope
- Excavation, formation and compacted sub-base
- Foul and surface water drainage, gullies, channels and connections
- Ducting for lighting, power and communications
- Kerbing, edgings, channels and footways
- Hardstanding, yards and access routes
- Reinstatement following service work
What affects the programme
Ground conditions found on opening up, existing services that have to be located and worked around, weather during earthworks, and the sequencing of any utility provider who needs to be on site before the ground can be closed up.
Where we work
Most of our groundworks and civils are in Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian, with recent jobs in Penicuik, Dalkeith, Haddington, Bathgate and Newbridge. We also deliver infrastructure work further afield, from Dundee and Kilsyth to Oban and Inverness.
QUESTIONS
Common questions.
Why does drainage have to be decided before the surfacing?
Because the falls across the whole area have to run to it. Once the surface is down, correcting a fall means lifting it again.
What happens if the ground underneath is soft?
It is dealt with at formation, usually through drainage, a separation layer or replacing the material. Building over soft ground and hoping the surface carries it is what causes the failure two years later.
Can ducting be added after a site is surfaced?
It can, but it means cutting a trench through the new surface and reinstating it, which leaves a joint that will need sealing and never matches. Putting the ducts in first is far cheaper.
Does footway construction differ from road construction?
Yes. Footways carry different loads and are built to their own specification rather than as a thinner version of the carriageway.
