SERVICE
Retail Surfacing
A retail car park is a surfacing job with a trading site sitting on top of it. The programme is usually harder than the surfacing.
THE SERVICE
Phased around trading.
Handed back finished.
The work itself is much the same as resurfacing anywhere else. What changes is that customers, deliveries and staff all need to keep moving while it happens. That makes phasing the real skill. The car park gets broken into sections, each one taken, resurfaced and handed back before the next is opened up, so there’s always a route in, parking available and a clear way to the entrance.
Some parts can’t be closed at all without agreement in advance. Service yards and delivery bays are tied to booking slots. Accessible bays and parent bays have to stay available or be relocated somewhere that still works. Trolley routes and pedestrian crossings between the parking and the door need a safe line that doesn’t run through the works.
Edge protection matters more here than almost anywhere, because the people walking past aren’t site staff and aren’t expecting to be near hot material or plant. Sections are barriered rather than coned wherever the public are close.
Handing a section back means it’s genuinely finished. Bays, arrows, hatching and accessible markings all go back before it reopens, not on a later visit, because an unmarked car park fills up wrong within an hour.

DELIVERY STRUCTURE
How the work runs
- 01Walk the site and agree the phasing plan with the site or centre manager.
- 02Confirm the delivery, collection and peak trading times to work around.
- 03Take the first section, protect it and resurface it.
- 04Reinstate the car park markings and reopen it before the next section is taken.
- 05Repeat through the phases, adjusting where trading patterns change.
- 06Final walk round with the site team.
What affects the programme
Trading hours, delivery windows and seasonal peaks. Night working is common where footfall makes daytime phasing impractical. Drainage is worth checking early, because standing water in a car park is the complaint that comes back, and it’s cheaper to correct the falls while the surface is off.
Where we work
From our base in Loanhead we cover retail sites across Edinburgh and the Lothians, including Cameron Toll, Asda Chesser and Asda Straiton, as well as Livingston, Dunbar, Newtongrange and Galashiels. Across central Scotland we’ve worked in Glasgow, Stirling, Stenhousemuir and Alloa, and for national retailers we deliver car park programmes throughout Scotland, northern England and Ireland.
QUESTIONS
Common questions.
Can a car park be resurfaced while it stays open?
Usually yes. The car park is split into sections and handed back one at a time, so a proportion of spaces and a clear route to the entrance stay available throughout.
How long does a car park resurfacing take?
It depends far more on the phasing than on the area. The same car park done in one closure will finish considerably faster than the same job phased around trading.
Do the bay markings get put back straight away?
They should. A section that reopens without markings fills up in the wrong pattern immediately, so markings go back before each section is handed over.
What causes puddles in a car park?
Falls that do not run to the drainage, blocked or sunken gullies, or settlement in the layers below. Resurfacing over the top without correcting the levels leaves the puddle exactly where it was.
