Strathesk Walking Route, Penicuik: tactile paving and footpath works.
The job
We carried out tactile paving and footpath works on the Strathesk walking route in Penicuik.
About the area
Penicuik is a Midlothian town on the west bank of the River North Esk, on the A701 about 8.5 miles from Edinburgh, in the Midlothian Council area, with the Pentland Hills to the west. Strathesk is a residential area, and Strathesk Primary School is on Eastfield Farm Road. It’s about 4 miles by road from our yard at Bilston Glen, Loanhead.
Nearby work
Close by, we’ve also worked at Nivensknowe Caravan Park, Asda Straiton and on the A7 at the Sun Inn.
What this kind of job involves
Tactile paving warns people with sight loss where a footpath meets a crossing or a change in level, so it has to be laid to a set pattern, flush with the surface and in the right position. Walking-route works usually keep a safe path open for pedestrians throughout, often by working one side at a time. Kerb heights and drainage are checked as part of the job because they decide how usable the route is for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
