Dalry, Edinburgh: old cobbles lifted, cleaned and relaid on a side road for the City of Edinburgh Council.

The job

The small side road had suffered under HGV delivery vehicles, with areas sinking, cobbles broken, water lying and plenty of trip hazards. We lifted the affected areas, cleaned the blocks and relaid them by hand. Over the years the blocks had been patched with bitumen, asphalt, concrete, grout and sand cement, so cleaning them was gruelling, and piecing a 600m² jigsaw back together was no easy task.

Working on site

The street was closed to traffic while we worked. The team helped local residents and businesses with their day to day needs throughout: taking bins out to the main road, helping vulnerable residents, installing ramps, moving traffic management, and talking to residents as the job went on so problems were solved before they became one. We’ve been back since, and the road is still as solid as we left it.
